John Lennon's band The Quarrymen (inspired by the name of Quarry Bank High school), were playing in St. Peter's Church field as part of the annual Woolton Fete (Liverpool) on Saturday, 6th July, 1957. In the audience was Paul McCartney, who had come along just to watch the band. Lennon and McCartney later talked to each other about music, before the Quarrymen performed a second show in the Church Hall that evening. Paul McCartney recalled: 'There was a guy up on the stage wearing a checked shirt, looking pretty good singing a song I loved, the Del-Vikings' Come Go With Me. He was filling in with blues lines, I thought that was good, and he was singing well.' John Lennon recalled: 'That was the day, the day I met Paul, that it started moving.'

Cher Lloyd, Katie Waissel, Matt Cardle, One Direction and company will be taking on John, Paul, George and Ringo on the famous Fountain Studios stage in Wembley to prove that they can sing some of the best songs ever written to a passable (or possibly below) standard.
Lets hope Harry Styles from One Direction at least gets briefed to say something funny along the lines of, 'I'd like to say thank you on behalf of the group and ourselves and I hope we've passed the audition … sadly, they won't.
Of course, the live versions will as always be available for download via iTunes, but as is usually the case with these affairs, the original tracks are sure to get a big boost too. At present The Beatles are already making significant inroads into the UK charts. Hey Jude is at 25 in the iTunes chart, with Twist and Shout and Let it Be also rising fast in the Top 40.
In the iTunes rock chart The Beatles are currently occupying 33 of the top 40 positions, only currently held off number one by Pink. The top 10 albums are also dominated by The Beatles, with seven of the top ten titles from the Fab Four's back catalogue.

In commemoration of what would have been John Lennon's 70th birthday, EMI will release eight of John Lennon's classic solo albums and rare unreleased recordings, that have been digitally remastered from John's original mixes. This will mark the launch of the Gimme Some Truth campaign that will include special events all around the world. The rare and previously unreleased songs, along with all the new 2010 digitally remastered albums, will be released on October 4th (UK), 5th (US), 2010.

John Lennon Remembered
John Lennon will be remembered in a tribute season of music, film and verse in his home city. The two-month cultural programme of events will be launched on October 9 – on what would have been the former Beatle's 70th birthday. And they will come to a climax with a major memorial concert, John Lennon Remembered, at the Echo Arena Liverpool on December 9, the day after the 30th anniversary of his murder. The John Lennon Tribute Season is being organised by the Beatles Story, Cavern City Tours, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Mersey Partnership, Liverpool One and Liverpool City Council.
